Paleoseismology of the Sürgü and Çardak faults - splays of the Eastern Anatolian Fault Zone, Türkiye

The sinistral East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ) and the dextral North (NAFZ) are two important strike-slip faults that delimit boundaries of plate. north-south directed compressional forces in eastern Türkiye trigger westward escape plate along these prominent structures. This study aims to reveal earthquake history Sürgü Çardak faults, which fault segments splay from EAFZ. In this context, overall, four paleoseismologic trenches were dug, on Fault. Along Fault, at least paleoearthquake events have been determined trench walls, one event occurred around 3400 BCE second happened between 2085 ± 65 790 20 BCE. Moreover, trenching results indicate surface rupturing paleoearthquakes 10520 95 5780 BCE, 3215 125 825 55 CE, respectively. focal mechanisms instrumental earthquakes EAFZ show NNE-SSW trending actively dominating tectonic setting region contemporary era. Paleoseismological investigations suggested potential produce surface-rupturing with an estimated magnitude 7 or larger.
